I taught Math to Emotionally Impaired and Court Adjudicated Adolescent Boys for 25 years. Differentiated Instruction was necessary before this phrase was commonly used. The foundation for success with each individual student is the relationship he has with you and everyone within your school community. Building on this foundation, the student's learning style and multiple intelligence profile inform lesson design. Instruction will be orchestrated within the parameters of the classroom social network using formative assessments to guide instruction. Summative assessments are then used to show lesson goals and objectives have been met. These become the occasion for celebration and nuture student belief in their capacity to learn.
Each teaching/learning experience ends with a self evaluation. This emphasizes individual responsibility for learning and sets the stage for beginning a new learning experience. The Quality Improvement Cycle of Plan / Do / Evaluate is used repeatedly throughout the school in all situations that depend on learning to occur.
I find a method of lesson design and instruction that gives structure to my planning and teaching to be useful. Books that have been useful to me are Quantum Teaching by Bobbi DePorter, Mark Reardon & Sarah Singer-Nourie. The First Days of School by Harry Wong and How the Brain Learns by Dr. David Sousa.
